How the roofing industry is helping slow down global warming
With temperatures on the rise, global warming has never been a bigger issue. Most industries have implemented greener initiatives to battle the greenhouse effect, and governments around the world propose different methods for tackling the issue. The commercial roofing industry has begun taking steps toward solving the issue, too, and their approach is not only exciting but hugely innovative.
Something as simple as changing the colors of the roofs of our institutions can significantly slow down the global warming. The idea was first proposed in 2008 at the California’s Climate Change Research conference and is built on the notion that white roofs reflect a greater portion of sunlight back to space. The idea is to replace the dark shingles on rooftops with a lighter color, which in theory could offset as much as 10 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
Other commercial roofing solutions include planting small-scale parks and gardens atop buildings to filter the rainfall and make it less acidic while reducing air pollution and our carbon footprint in the process. According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, this urban adaptation approach can be an effective strategy to simultaneously cool buildings and address climate change.
Of course, most of these ideas are still in the concept stage and their implementation will depend on a variety of factors, including price and geographical location. But they are nevertheless exciting strategies to combat climate change and slow down global warming.
